On Thursday 23 June 2022, Year 11 pupils attended two workshops delivered as part of the Bloom programme.  Bloom is a UK-wide programme which supports young people by equipping them with the tools and knowledge they need to build their resilience so they can better protect and maintain their mental health through life’s transitions, both now and in the future.  Bloom has been developed by Mental Health UK which is a charity made up of four mental health charities – one in each nation of the UK.  In Northern Ireland, Bloom is delivered by MindWise.

The first workshop focused on the theme of Resilience and explored how resilience is an important protective factor in maintaining good mental health.  Pupils were introduced to the concept of “neuroplasticity” as a way of understanding how the brain works.  The second workshop was based on the theme of Making Decisions About the Future and provided pupils with some models and strategies for making good decisions.  During the workshop, pupils were introduced to the “Curiosity Cycle” and the idea of the “Inner Critic” versus the “Inner Coach”.  Being aware of personal thinking patterns and the power of positive self-talk were also considered as key aspects of good mental health.

We are grateful to Bronagh Maguire for facilitating the workshops.
