The school was founded in 1927 by Monsignor John Ward, Parish Priest of Magherafelt, to provide secondary education for Catholic girls of the area under the direction of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Bordeaux.
ICT - Information and Communication Technology
ICT in St. Mary's provides a learning solution with opportunities to access education through a learning environment that connects:
- Learners
- Parents
- Teachers
- The wider Community/Partner Schools and Businesses
Our vision for ICT is understood by all staff and supports and enhances the school aims in terms of:
- Learning
- Teaching
- Management & Administration
To realise this vision, ICT is well resourced throughout the school with many subject areas having access to their own well equipped teaching area: Science, Technology and Design, Mathematics, Art and Design, ICT, Geography, Business Studies and Economics, Physical Education, Music and Home Economics.
We take full advantage of the use of ICT to:
- support learning and improve performance through: Virtual Learning Environments, Interactive Whiteboards and the use of Digital Technologies.
- support our Specialist School Development Plan with ICT playing an important role in Personalised Learning and Community Links.
- improve our overall effectiveness and efficiency in terms of Communication and Management Tools.
ICT is also a curricular subject and the ICT Department has three fully equipped ICT suites. Each suite provides access to an extensive range of both hardware and software, including, Web authoring, Multimedia, Imaging and Desk Top Publishing. Pupils have opportunities to use ICT to develop their personal skills in the use of a wide range of areas from basic Word Processing to the customisation of complex Relational Databases and automated routines. Through the use of the Communications Technology and LNI they can access Learning Resources and extend their learning opportunities to outside the classroom including their home.
